Encouraging Children to Reach for the Stars like Dr. Mae C. Jemison!
Preschoolers in teacher Norma Bell’s classroom are reaching for the stars by building a rocket ship to honor the first African American woman to travel in space, Dr. Mae C. Jemison!
Students learned about Dr. Jemison, including her curiosity, intelligence, and determination. Ms. Bell read aloud the book “Mae Among the Stars” by Roda Ahmend. While the activities celebrating Dr. Jemison’s accomplishments are part of Ms. Bell’s Black History Month lessons, Ms. Bell and other Children’s Village teachers include culturally responsive teaching throughout the year. “The children worked together to create a 3-D rocket ship in honor of Dr. Jemison. They learned from her… if you DREAM IT, BELIEVE IT, and WORK HARD, ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE!,” says Ms. Bell.
