School-Age Program: Academic Enrichment for K-6th Graders in a Safe, Nurturing Environment

Our School-Age Program continues to provide high-quality academic enrichment to K-6th graders. We are following COVID safety measures while providing a warm, nurturing learning environment.

Currently, 79 school-age students are enrolled and we look forward to welcoming your family. In the meantime, we are 'opening our doors' to you — through photographs!

We are here to assist you as you consider enrolling your child. You may have questions about health and safety guidelines, subsidy, schedules, and after-school pick-ups.

Please contact Beth Baker at bethb@childrensvillagephila.org or (215) 931-0192 or Sophia Nui, Bilingual Parent Teacher Coordinator, at sophian@childrensvillagephila.org or (215) 931-0172.

Thank you and we look forward to hearing from you!

FOCUSING ON LITERACY
Building Reading and Writing Skills

Due to pandemic-related school closures, many young learners have missed out on educational approaches that build reading and writing skills. To respond, teachers in classroom 401 are currently focusing on literacy development.

(above) To master the mechanics of letter writing, a student uses shapes to create the letter 'A'.

Displayed on the alphabet bulletin board behind the student are sight words -- words that are commonly used and that children are encouraged to memorize by sight.

PROJECT-BASED LEARNING

Researching, Collaborating, and Presenting What was Learned!

Our teachers use project-based learning (PBL), which invites students to explore topics that interest them. Over a multi-week period, students research solutions to problems relating to the project theme, such as ways to save an endangered animal. Students work independently and with classmates and the approach often features S.T.E.M. learning. (above) As a part of the culminating activity on endangered animals, students use a diorama to explain how to protect polar bears' habitat.

Another class studied Greek Mythology and how themes, such as confronting challenges and heroic behavior, relate to students' lives. Students created (above) constellations, characters, and comic books, which then became part of the class library.

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING
Key to A Child's Lifelong Success

Helping children understand their emotions can contribute to academic and life success. Given the upheaval from the pandemic, supporting students' social-emotional development today takes on even greater significance.

Working with the Committee for Children, Children's Village is implementing a new research-based social-emotional learning (SEL) approach for school-age students.

Teacher Ha Nguyen uses literature as an entry point to a lesson on acceptance.

HEALTHY BODIES, HEALTHY MINDS
Nutritious Meals, Health Education, and Physical Activity

Reflecting our belief in supporting the whole child, we provide students with the best possible nutrition (view the School-Age menu here).

Additionally, we provide health education and ensure that students have daily opportunities for physical activity -- in our big body play place (below) or (weather permitting) on our play deck or at the park.

AND MUCH MORE…

We look forward to hearing from you!
